For many centuries we have used the term "Information Technology" to describe the application of computers and telecommunication devices to store, retrieve, transmit and manipulate data. This term was commonly used to describe computers and computer networks but encompassed other technologies that have the ability to distribute as information, for example television and telephones.
Over time and with the continued evolution of technological devices, an extension has been added to this term and such devices are now referred to as "Information Communication Technologies" (ICTs). Although an extension to the existing synonym, the term now includes any device that allows us to store, retrieve, manipulate, transmit or receive information electronically and in a variety of digital forms.
